There are a lot of things that we have learned about business in the last eight years but the hardest lesson is to not put all our eggs in one basket. We put everything into running our business, as a couple. A couple of what, you might do well to ask?
All good intentions aside – wanting to have a business we could run from home so we could have our daughter being the most important – we are finding out one important thing: when business slows down, along with the economy, there is no back up source of income to rely on. There is no wife or husband, behind the scenes, with a job-job to pick up the slack.
It was always our fall back position that I would go back to work if things got tough. It never occurred to either of us that I would have difficulty finding that work. When a local employment counselor tells you to seek work elsewhere (ie Toronto, not Peterborough) you really wonder what you have gotten yourself in to.
So the search continues…
